Many years ago, I said, "Yes", when they called and asked me to fill out the survey.  The next time, I told them, "No".  They still sent me the envelope with the forms and the money.  I tossed the paperwork and kept the cash.  Having caller ID, I never answer if I don't know who is calling, so I never talk with the Neilson people.  Still, they call and never leave messages.  They send me the packets and I toss everything except the cash.  Sometimes, I see unopened Neilson envelopes in the trash at the post office and have think that the post master has alot of crisp $1 bills at the end of the day!
Report by rained out Long ago Unknown
There is an option at the very beginning when you answer that is 1 for English and 2 for Spanish. Perhaps you accidentally hit "2". That is not their problem.
Report by Riley Long ago Unknown
They just called and immediately started speaking in Spanish. English is still our Language isn't it. That made me very angry.

I did answer a call from Nielsen Ratings about 3 years ago and told them then that I've not watched TV in over 10 years and still don't......so why am I constantly being called?!  Do they really think that if I've not watched TV in over 10 years I'm going to suddenly go back to doing so?  NOT!

Just to say, voting for the President isn't really a privilege. Not anymore and few people do that in comparison to the number of people able to in this country. People are going to complain no matter what. Seems like a lot of people here would rather not get the money because it takes a few min. of their time. They just want to complain about the hassle. Most people have caller id so they aren't answering anyway and yet they complain. I'm just like, REALLY??
Report by Nora Long ago Unknown
I agree it's very reputable. They called me a few weeks ago asking if I would participate in a week long tv diary survey and last week we got it in the mail along with $30 as a thank you for participating. This week I have just been writing down all the programs I watch and what channels in the little diary and at the end of the week I send it back to them. No hassle for me or anything. I don't get why people are getting so angry about them calling, I was pretty excited to get to be a part of the Nielson Raitings..

I don't mind if they call and ask occasionally, however you're incorrect about them only calling if you have previously given the number out or done surveys. The number they call is our house phone. We NEVER use it and have never, ever given it out for anything or to anyone. It's basically a backup phone just in case. They really do choose completely random numbers, because we've also never done a survey for them before.

I could not agree more.  It is totally annoying to receive what so many calls a week and almost always no one on the call - just some robo dialer to see if you are home perhaps.  I have asked them a zillion times to stop calling.
Report by Terry Long ago Unknown
I've received at least a dozen calls in a week at all hours of the day and night - even one on a Sunday and only once did they actually leave a message that started out with "I'm not trying to sell anything."  I'm also on the Do Not Call list and have an unpublished number, so I never pick up a call that shows "unknown caller" in the Caller ID......only once did this number show up as being Nielsen.  My point is:  If I don't answer the phone after the first few attempts - move on and stop calling me!  Enough is enough!

Neither the no-call list nor an unlisted number will protect you from surveys, since the DNC does not apply to research calls and surveys call randomly selected numbers that are generated by a computer program.

They don't care how much you watch television.  They try to get an overall sampling.  I have done many tv diaries over the years for them and there is nothing burdensome to anyone, there is no cost to anyone, they have always been extremely professional and they pay you to do it.
Report by Informed Long ago Unknown
Surveys are not covered under the Do Not Call list. Anyone conducting a survey can call you regardless of your registry. However, if they call you under the guise of a survey and then try to sell you something (not something the true Nielsen rating would do and not something I am saying this call does) then they need to be reported.

If it makes you so mad that they call it literally takes about 2 seconds to hit ignore on your phone. If you answer it takes maybe 3 to hang up once you know who they are. Seriously, what is the big deal about getting a phone call. I'd hate to see you get a wrong number call.

Surveys are not covered under the Do Not Call list. Anyone conducting a survey can call you regardless of your registry.

I agree it's very reputable. They called me a few weeks ago asking if I would participate in a week long tv diary survey and last week we got it in the mail along with $30 as a thank you for participating. I don't get why people are getting so angry about them calling, I was pretty excited to get to be a part of the Nielson Raitings..

Report by Steve Long ago Unknown
Yes, it is the Nielson Ratings... been around for Decades...They rate TV Shows & ask for your input to take back to the networks so they know who likes what.... (viewer demographics)If you are like me and HATE so called Reality TV..here is a chance to VOTE them out of existance by letting the Nielson People know you DONT WATCH THEM. When the networks & advertisers see that interest in certain programing is dropping, that is how shows get dropped... Got a show you like... want to keep it on the air?If they don't know people like a show it could go away...That is what Nielson is all about. If you're watching TV it only takes a minute or two of time to write down the channel numbers, the show name and make a couple x marks on the page. What else do you have to do during those commercial blitz?
Report by Gary Long ago Unknown
I don't mind if they call and ask occasionally, however you're incorrect about them only calling if you have previously given the number out or done surveys. The number they call is our house phone. We NEVER use it and have never, ever given it out for anything or to anyone. It's basically a backup phone just in case. They really do choose completely random numbers, because we've also never done a survey for them before.

From Lamet's post:If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):1.    The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.2.    Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.3.    File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.4.    File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.wvago.gov5.    File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=enIf these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. It appears the calls in question may be originating from outside the United States. When questioned, the individual calling refuses to disclose the full name or address of the collection agency they claim to represent.  These scammers have been able to provide consumers with identifying information, such as the consumer’s social security number, home address, e-mail address, names of family members and the consumer’s computer IP address.  Since the callers are able to provide valid personal information, consumers may become confused and believe they are being contacted in regard to a legitimate debt.If the initial debt collection scam is unsuccessful, consumers have been re-contacted months later with the scammers posing as law enforcement officers or officers of the court.  Typically, the consumer is threatened with arrest for fraud or some other fictitious crime unless the consumer agrees to immediately wire money via Western Union.  The fictitious officers strive to frighten and confuse consumers into compliance by using legal sounding terms such as “We’re filing an affidavit against you” or by stating a lawsuit has been or is in the process of being filed against the consumer.A hallmark of each scam has been calling consumers repeatedly at their place of employment.  This scam hit home when an employee of the Kansas Attorney General’s Office was repeatedly called both on her cell phone and at work.  Despite the employee’s repeated verbal disputes, the caller refused to provide any identifying information to allow her to send a written dispute. The scammer also continued to call her numerous times a day regarding a payday loan she denied obtaining. Two months later, she was again contacted by telephone by an individual identifying himself as an “officer”. “I denied owing the debt and refused to pay without being provided validation of the debt. I was then told, ‘If that’s the case, I will have local law enforcement come to your place of business and drag you out kicking and screaming’,” stated the employee.“It is important for consumers to know their rights under the law,” Attorney General Six said. “If a consumer is receiving calls from a debt collection company and believe it is a scam, I encourage them to contact our office immediately.”Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), collectors are required to send consumers a written notice within five days of the initial contact.  The notification should contain  information such as the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed and a statement informing the consumer they have thirty days to contact the debtor in writing to dispute the debt or request validation of the debt. In addition, legitimate debt collectors are prohibited by the FDCPA from making false or misleading representations, such as the consumer has committed a crime, implying nonpayment will result in the consumer’s arrest, or using the threat of violence.More information is available on the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf. Received message from David Johnston to call him back. He ended call saying "God Bless You".  I have done call monitoring for a major bank. I monitored India representatives who use America names. Rule 1 never close a call refering to religion. Matter of fact no reference to religion holidays as well. This is some type of scam. I received 2 calls from these idiots today. I called the number back and received recording saying "leave message".  Tomorrow, I will answer phone and give them a run for their money. I will keep you posted.

Why else would they be doing this? They sure as heck are not doing it for the benefit of our capitalistic government, who they DESPISE.http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-310-598-1752This scam has been going on for well over a year, now and has been recognized as such by the BBB:Chicago, IL – August 5, 2009 – The Better Business Bureau is issuing an alert about phony debt collectors that are calling consumers nationwide and claiming that they have defaulted on a payday loan and will be arrested if they don’t pay immediately. Claiming to be lawyers, the scammers say they are with the “Financial Accountability Association” or the “Federal Legislation of Unsecured Loans” and are equipped with a disconcerting amount of personal information about their potential victims. “Because the scammers have so much information about potential victims, the BBB is concerned that this may be the result of a data breach,” said Steve J. Bernas, president & CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. “Thousands of people may have had their personal information compromised, and given the scammers’ tactics, it appears that those who have previously used payday loan services could be particularly at risk.”According to reports received by the BBB and posted online, the scammers accuse the victim of defaulting on a payday loan and claim they are being sued. The phony debt collector threatens that, if the victim doesn’t pay as much as $1,000 immediately via wire or by providing bank account or credit card numbers, he or she will be arrested and extradited to California within the hour to stand trial. The scammers often may have the victim’s Social Security, old bank account numbers or driver’s license numbers as well as home addresses, employer information and even the names of personal friends and professional references. The BBB offers the following advice to consumers if they receive a suspicious telephone call about an outstanding debt: * Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation in writing which substantiates the debt. * Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the phone until you have confirmed the legitimacy of the call. * Review recent copies of your credit reports to ensure that the alleged debt is not affecting your credit. Consumers can do this for free once every 12 months, and can find more information here: http://www.ftc.gov/freereports * Under the Federal Trade Commission's Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, debt collectors may not harass, oppress, or abuse any person while attempting to collect a debt. * A debtor may be contacted between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. only and can be contacted at work unless instructed not to. * File a complaint with the FTC online if the caller is abusive, uses threats or otherwise violates federal telemarketing laws. * File a complaint with BBB online at www.bbb.org if you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you. http://www.thinkglink.com/article/2009/08/06/ ... eading-says-bbbhttp://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-214-618-5897This is a very active group of scammers, many of whom are calling from India (and probably other countries) and are in cahoots with a group of American pay day loan scammers. They attempt to extort money from consumers with a myriad of false and illegal threats, and alternately pose as debt collectors, federal and state law enforcement officers, lawyers and bankers. Their trademark is to use meaningless legalese gobblygook phrases like "We are downloading warrants against you" or "We are filing an affidavit against you." Another trademark phrase is to threaten the consumer with something like this ridiculous phrase: "If you don't pay then only God can help you."Typical of many financial scams of this variety, they usually demand payment via Western Union or MoneyGram or credit card. They use any number of phony names such as US National Bank, Federal Investigation Bureau, US Legal Investigation Bureau, Hopkins Law Office, United Legal Processing, Morgan Associates, United Pay Services, National Processing, White Collar Crime Unit and many more.  These criminals also use many phone numbers from many area codes; they're probably using caller-id spoofing software and/or VoIP to disguise their real location. The main thing to remember is that anytime someone calls you demanding money to prevent your arrest, or demanding your lawyer's name so they can sue you, it is ALWAYS a scam. No debt collector (let alone criminals posing as debt collectors) has the authority to have anyone arrested for anything. (And it's illegal to them to threaten such a thing.) And since these foreign dirtbags routinely impersonate law enforcement, it's also important to remember that American law enforcement officers aren't in the business of debt collection.  (Debt is a civil, not a criminal, matter.)The bottom line is, these are criminals trying to steal your money.A consumer posting a complaint about these same scammers at http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-718-831-7157 notes that 718-831-7157 is associated with an India-based "outsourcing" telephone bank.  Though a reverse search on WhitePages.com shows that 718-831-7157 is an unlisted land line in New York City, information on Debtbuyers.Com shows that that number is used by India-based Intellisourze. (Source: http://www.debtbuyers.com/debtbuyers.asp ) My guess is that it's a VoIP phone number. This is another piece of the puzzle that fits in perfectly with other information about this scam. There are some reports on 800Notes that have suggested that the crooks behind this offshore scam are also the crooks behind the notorious Bass/Ellis Crosby & Assoc./States Predisposition scams in Florida and Georgia. The interesting thing is that the number of complaints on here about the US National Bank/US Legal Investigation/Federal Investigation scam skyrocketed *after* April 7, 2008 when Florida obtained a $1.3 million judgment against Ted Ellis Crosby, shutdown his operations and barred him from ever conducting debt collections in Florida (Read http://myfloridalegal.com/newsrel.nsf/newsrel ... 5257424005858A6 ) There's certainly a good chance that the crooks placing these calls from India are doing so on behalf of the American crooks behind the Crosby/Bass/States Predisposition scams. Here's the contact information for the phone bank in India:IntellisOurzE BPO701, Sapphier, Nr. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement, lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, or if they threatened you with arrest, be sure to include that information in your report.2) File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en3) File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.4) The caller placed the call under a Texas area code. Even though the caller ID was probably spoofed or they're using VoIP technology to hide the fact that they're really calling from overseas, you should also file a complaint with the Texas Attorney General at http://www.oag.state.tx.us/consumer/complain.shtml 5) File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.naag.org6) The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-925-262-1327http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-678-954-6346http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-888-341-4004http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-856-831-0640http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-949-743-1140http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-410-505-8128http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-917-464-2534http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-210-858-6602http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-888-775-2121http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-949-743-1156http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-214-245-1402http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-214-245-0922http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-214-723-5572http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-904-425-2863http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-718-831-7157http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-904-425-2857http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-858-244-0444http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-954-678-9724http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-610-571-3252http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-310-909-8245...and, many, MANY more.

It's always from a black male (I'm quite certain). I tell them there is no one here by that name and they hang up.The Florida numbers are better. So far I've spoken to two women. When I tell them that this is a business number and there is no David Miller here, they apologize and hang up. Eventually they always call back, though. They've probably called 15 times over the course of the past two weeks. It's getting annoying.

Also they use local area code phone numbers from Florida to look like they are from your own hometown. This is a bill collector operating out of Florida. The company is NCO Financial Systems Inc. Their address is: 3450 W Busch Blvd 145Tampa, FL , 33618. You need to send them a "cease and desist" letter. Go to the Federal Trade Commmission web site (ftc.gov) and look up the Federal Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). They will give the law and what to say to these people to have them stop calling you. Just saying that they have the wrong number (oldest trick in the book) never works. Only a certified letter (return receipt) telling them to cease communication with you will work. Try getting a case number or file number if you feel like calling them again, but either way, if you don't send the request in writing, they won't stop. If they continue to call, file a complaint on the FTC web site and use your certified letter with the return receipt as evidence that you told them to stop and that they ignored you. Good luck.

If you owe sa company money and you don't pay,  they have to send the account to collections and then take you to court. The caller says that you or your attorney has to call back. No company you owe money to wants to have an attorney call on your behalf because they know the laws. It's just so aggravating. I'm glad I have a personal work number.

Phantom Debt Collectors From India Harass Americans, Demand MoneyBy BRIAN ROSS (@brianross) , CINDY GALLI and MATTHEW MOSK (@mattmosk) June 7, 2012 Hundreds of thousands of cash-strapped Americans have been targeted by abusive debt collectors operating out of overseas call centers suspected of links to organized crime in India, law enforcement officials told ABC News. The calls are part of a massive scam, one that appears to target struggling Americans -- especially those who have gone online to apply for payday loans. Armed with personal information from those pilfered applications, the threatening callers, who claim to be debt collectors poised to initiate legal action, have managed to pry loose millions of dollars from their victims -- even when the victims never owed money in the first place."This is what we call a phantom debt collection scam," said Jon Leibowitz, the chairman of the Federal Trade Commission. "It's a very pernicious and innovative new fraud."Working through call centers in India, the commission estimates that the criminals have dialed at least 2.5 million calls, persuading already cash-strapped victims to send them more than $5 million. Some have reported receiving dozens of calls per hour. They are victims like Cindy Gervais, of New Orleans, who went online for a quick loan when her husband's car was hit by a driver who didn't have insurance.Even though she paid the loan off, the so-called "phantom" debt collectors with Indian accents began calling to say she still owed money. He more or less told me that if I didn't pay, they were going to have someone on my doorstep to arrest me," she told ABC News. "And that they were going to contact my place of business, and tell them what kind of person I am."At first, she said she resisted. Then the calls became more frequent, and started to ring on her cell phone, and at the grocery distribution company where she had worked for 27 years."I was more or less was in panic mode because he told me there would be someone before noon at my place of business to arrest me and take me to jail," she said tearfully. "So I agreed to pay him."After receiving scores of complaints, investigators with the FTC said they began tracking the calls, and following the payments. They alleged the payments led them to a California company run by an Indian-American named Kirit Patel, and that such scams would not be possible without American front men."I would say that all roads of this scam, or many of the roads of this scam, lead back to Mr. Patel," said the FTC's Leibowitz.ABC News tracked Patel for weeks, from the suburbs of San Francisco to Austin, Texas.Patel refused to talk. But his lawyer, Mark Ellis, said he believes it is far too early to pass judgment on his client. Ellis, a Sacramento-based attorney, told ABC News that Patel was hired for a nominal fee to set up an American shell company, and had no idea what the call centers in India were doing."I can tell you, he was as snookered by the people in India as anybody," Ellis said. "He's a 69-year-old man who is nearing his retirement who thought all he had to do was set up some corporations and everything was on the up and up. He's completely dismayed that he has become the lightning rod of this entire problem."A close friend of Patel's also defended him in a brief interview at his home, saying Patel was not trying to defraud anyone -- he was just an unwitting, bit player in a larger scheme."If Mr. Patel was just a cog in the wheel he seems to have been a pretty big cog," Leibowitz said. "It is clear that Patel was integrally involved with this scam." Leibowitz points to thousands of pages of financial and phone records gathered by the FTC and filed as part of a civil case brought against him in the U.S. District Court in Sacramento last month. When FTC lawyers sought to freeze his assets and prevent his business from continuing to operate, Patel responded by invoking his rights against self-incrimination. His lawyer told ABC News he has had to be careful in how he responds to the allegations in civil court "because there is a potential criminal action," but that Patel maintains the allegations against him are false. Federal investigators said the phantom debt collection operation that allegedly benefitted from Patel's assistance was one of several that all trace back to the same small town in Western India called Ahmedabad. Callers use technology to make it appear that the calls originate inside the U.S. Victims provided ABC News with recordings of dozens of the calls, and many of the thickly accented callers appear to be reading off a script. "Subpoenas have been readied, and Monday morning you're going to be picked up from your home," one caller says on a victim's voicemail. "And you have children. Don't worry about your children. We have a childcare department to take care of the children." "You will be behind bars for six months," said another caller. "And once you go behind bars, you will lose your job. Once you are behind the bars, you won't get a single drop of water." William Peerce Howard, a Tampa attorney who represents victims of harassment from debt collectors, said it takes an especially twisted criminal to use threats and coercion to pry money from someone who is already struggling financially "These guys really are the most visible villains in America today," he said. "They make a living scaring people."Mark Merola, of Florida, said he just panicked when the caller told him he might be arrested at the deli where he works in a Florida retirement community. "I was nervous. I didn't want to embarrass myself, my family," he said. He used his debit card to pay the collector $576. Afterwards, he says he realized "how stupid I was." "It just happened so fast," he said. "I got scared." Leibowitz said he hopes with more attention, future potential targets of the scam will recognize red flags before they turn over any money. If callers say they are from the police, consumers should know that law enforcement officers do not collect debt for private parties. If the caller is speaking with a thick Indian accent, but calls themselves by a names such as Officer Mike Johnson, that should be a tip off. And if they're calling 40 times in two hours, that's another red flag. "Legitimate debt collectors, legitimate pay day lenders don't do those sorts of things," he said. Merola said he would like to see anyone involved in the scam prosecuted aggressively. "There's no place in society for these people," he said. http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/phantom-debt-co ... 16512428&page=2
