We got a call from this number at 1 a.m. on the Saturday right before election day.  It was a recorded spoof of the usual political calls:  "Why am I running for office?  To put myself out of a job."  I hung up and they called right back.  If this is really the number for a look-up service, then someone who works there must have been bored and decided to make prank calls.

This number has been calling me several times a day, pretending to be ebay. I called eBay support twice and both reps told me that it was NOT legit ebay number and advised that I report it. It is against eBay policy to call ebay users unless there is a problem! I filed a complaint with FCC and Do Not Call!Afterwards this number called me again and her name was Stacy and she said she was calling "ON BEHALF OF EBAY" and when I told her that I reported the number she was calling from to ebay and FCC and Do Not Call, she hung up!People do not be fooled!! It is not a legit phone number! First they gain your trust with tips and then start getting into your personal info! Ebay never calls anyone, specially several times a day!!Yes, it does say how to change settings if you call it back, but I did not have those settings that way in the first place!!

801-545-1800

592 Report Long ago Unknown
This is not a scam. If you call the number back, they explain it is just a courtesy call that ebay makes to different users. The message goes on to explain that there is no concern with your account, and tells you how to change your personal settings to no longer receive the automated calls.

I just recieved a call from this number a couple of minutes ago and I picked up. The voice was crackly enough that I couldn't even understand who it was or what they were calling about (it sounded like they were disguising their voice) so I hung up and searched the number more out of curiosity than anything. What makes me really skeptical is that I am using my dad's ebay account and I never gave paypal or ebay my phone number, they only have my dad's, so I have reason to believe that this is fraud.

I had received a few calls from this number over an 8 day period, with no messages left. Finally, I was home when they called yesterday, and the man said he was from eBay, and he was giving me a courtesy call to tell me my account could be suspended for Duplicate listings. I asked him which of my accounts was in question, and he did name one of my accounts. I asked him for specific examples and he stated he could not provide that level of detail on this courtesy call. Long and short, I pressed him for answers and he hung up on me. I called ebay customer support, who stated this was not a legit number from eBay. But he queried the number and based his statement on this internet listing.Like other ebayers listed below, I HAVE received calls from this phone number in Utah call center before, advising me of new features and how to improve sales. eBay is not always the most forthright, honest or divulgent company. I have caught them on several occasions over the years providing, incorrect or false info. I believe it was eBay.

You are correct!  I just got the suspicious call from 801-545-1800 alleging they were from eBay and wanted to ask questions about my account.  My wife took the call and said she was not the account holder and knew nothing about my account and they said they would send an email.  I checked my email and eBay, and no messages.  I called eBay's 866 number and they confirmed that no one from eBay has made contact on my account, as they have record from anyone that would attempt contact.  eBay said if they need to reach a member, they send a message through eBay's internal messaging system under My eBay.  I told him I have no messages and no emails from eBay.  He confirmed the phone call was not from eBay and it is indeed a scam.  So for those that think it is real, they are gullible as they are falling for the scam.

Actually, that's not true.  It's true if you have little to no volume of sales.  Ebay wouldn't waste their time and call a person who sells less than $1000 annually.  When I hardly sold anything, I got this call once or twice a year.  WHen my sales went to $250/month, I got it once a month. Now that I sell over $30,000 year, I get this call weekly.  If you notice, lately it is hard to contact eBay directly especially if you're not a powerseller, thru email.  They have reduced their customer reps who answer emails to.  If you're not a powerseller, you have to wait in long lines to get to a live person, and most ebayers can't wait 60-120 minutes to have a simple answer to a basic question. The explaination I was given from my powerseller rep (who also confirms this is a legit number and call) is that more than 90% of the issues and questions being sent it, the answers could be found in under 5 minutes of research using the Ebay Help system.  Sadly, unless you do a lot of volume in your sales, they make it hard to contact someone to help you.It is an Ebay call center in Utah.  I maynot be listed under "eBay" as the owner of the number, but by a company that eBay contracts to make calls on their behalf.  If you call HP support on the 800 number, your call isnt sent to anywhere near their HQ.  It used to send you to Canada 6 years ago.  Now most likely your call will be "Tom from Kansas City", but with a disctinct Indian accent.  It's a US number, but the call center is in India, so the actual location of hte call center is moot.  Have a MN phone number, but It's only takes 1 phonecall to get the calls forwarded to any number outside MN.  the location of the area code on the number is worthless info.Ebay's policy is not to hand out phone numbers to it's customers, unless it's absolutely needed, and then only for certain issues.  It's always the best advice to not answer a phone call if you don't know where it's from, but then again, you can always hang up.

Either way you look at this phone call we have been getting. The fact remains phone call solicitations are bad news these days. As my Bank, my Police Dept, My Ebay legit messages puts it: you simply do not give information over the phone and a knock at your door unless you are 100% certain who they are and what do they want. When a person on the other end of the phone calls me and asked my name I know they do not have it (well that is good advice to assume). Should this be a legit call ebay should change there business model. We have all had messages from ebay stating not to give information except on the ebay webpage and you know that is legit.

801-545-1800

ebay is like any other major company...have you ever heard of outsourcing?  This is when  a company hires call centers to do their promoting for them.  Therefore they don't always do their own solicitations.  However, ebay also has a rep for their sellers.  The name of my ebay rep is Ron.  I am sure I am on several of their lists because I have received calls on various different things but there is not a single one that has asked me for any personal information, password, pin etc.  How is it a scam or fraud if they aren't asking for any personal information?  They'd have to get your information in order to do something...hhmmmm imagine that!!   It may be a nuisance to you that you are receiving a solicitation call or a customer service call (trying to assist you or inform you of ebay information) since you are a registered ebay user, but that doesn't constitute fraud or scam!!!  They have the right to call you because you came to them and asked to open an account, again...hhmmm imagine that!!  Any company that you have done business with in the past year has a legal right to contact you.  If you have done business with ebay in the past year they have a right to call you.  If you are a business there is no do not call list there are only do not call lists for residences.  Don't be so blindsighted by fear (of a phone call that you CAN hang up on) that you lose an opportunity to increase your ebay sales or a free listing day, or a number of things the call is trying to inform you of ...so silly to be an ostrich with your head in the ground - reminds me of the Salem Witch Trials....OMG EBay called you!!!!!!!....it's a scam, it's fruad---- omg you're the one calling me...let's burn them at the stake and call them scams and fraud for trying to build their business and yours.  seriously how ridiculous!!!!

Or they will call you anyway if you are way behind on a payment as I am.The rest of you people wh just came on here to check out the number then don't listen to the other clowns talking bad about it. I just missed a call from this number.  I used the cell number they called to activate my account a few minutes ago, so I don't know who else from Salt Lake City would have called me within an hour of activating my eBay account.  So, to everyone who thinks it's a scammer, and not to say that I can't call anyone I want using ebay's number as my outgoing caller id, I highly doubt it was anyone but eBay unless they JUST gave my cell number to someone else.  Caller ID "spoofing" only costs me $3.99/year--I only use it for business purposes, not posing as someone else, but it wouldn't be hard for someone to pretend to be eBay.

I say again, THEY WILL NOT CALL YOU! My advice, trust no one that calls you. Call customer service or have them provide you with a number you can call back. And even then, don't provide your banking information over the phone.

I am a 10 year eBay employee. All eBay employees in the (801) area code of Salt Lake City have numbers ranging from 545-1801 to 545-2700. When an employee calls outbound the system masks their direct extension behind the (801) 545-1800 number. If you call (801) 545-1888, you'll get a company number. It's real people, calm down...

Yes, this is a telemarketer. I have been getting multiple calls with either no response at all or a minimal few words and never responds to what you are saying before hanging up. After a week or so of this, I started calling the numbers, and they are repeats of some of the numbers people have listed here. The line gives "a please hold while connecting" message, and then you get a salesman trying to sell you stuff. So here is the gimmick. This is a mass automated call thing, with recorded words or greetings (to create curiosity, that maybe its a real call & you got cut off, or if by chance you are expecting an important call) that then hang up, to try to get you to call back so they have a "live caller", and then they hook you up to a salesman, so the salesman doesn't have to waist their time on dead calls. A new low in telemarketing harassment. Everything from supposed cruise promotions to credit card promos to ED pills.

add this number to the list: 773-554-3796 and 360-477-6873...These people are psychos and need to be stopped! This is phone harassment...I have been called countless times by all the numbers on the list.  When I try to call back they hang up or speak in a heavy foreign accent when I ask them to repeat they hang up. I did almost understand one who I think asked if I wanted  some sample of something.  I have repeatedly demanded that they remove my number and not call again but they just switch to a new number and start speed dialing me again!  How they could ever sell ANYTHING is crazy since NO ONE in America could understand them and even if they did, these fools hang up at least 90% of the time!!  Does anyone know how these morons can be reported or shut down?  I cannot even catch the name of the business. If anyone has it please publish it here so everyone will know and we can report them to the Better Business Bureau and also we could bombard their website with harassment like they give us and complaints!! And note to all you people who call me on the phone:  You have absolutely NO chance of me buying anything when you ship your jobs overseas and have some hateful, foreigner calling me and harassing me!!! Everyone needs to also complain to legit businesses that seem to only employ out of the country service agents. It is RIDICULOUS! Customer service in this country hardly exists anymore!

We have all had messages from ebay stating not to give information except on the ebay webpage and you know that is legit.

ebay is like any other major company...have you ever heard of outsourcing?

We have all had messages from ebay stating not to give information except on the ebay webpage and you know that is legit.

ebay is like any other major company...have you ever heard of outsourcing?

I got a call today that left a message about ebay...however i do have an ebay store.  i did just reach my power seller level a few days ago and on my sellers page it tells me i need to call to discuss increasing my selling limits, etc. This is not a scam.  The reason it is not a scam is because it is not asking you for any information.  The message was just informative, letting me know of specials for ebay stores on listing prices etc.  Everything directed me to ebay.com (my ebay or manage my store).  Nothing asked me to call anyone or what my credit card info was or anything about my sales figures...just told me to go to ebay.com and look under selling tools and a couple other things.  Also there actually IS a real number to contact ebay.  It took awhile to find it but I found it under resolve an issue.  Don't know if you can find it if you don't have an active item or not.  I have called ebay and talked to them in December and they also help with paypal.  (I had an issue with a refund that had not been paid) Of course you have to verify yourself to ebay for your account.  If you want to call ebay they have a phone number but you have to contact them online first to get a pin code and that pin number is only good for 15 mins.  Always best to be cautious though...soo many scams out there but this one is actually legit.

No it's not a fraud - it happens to be the way eBay does some of their marketing.  Good grief, I've never seen so many mis-informed paranoid people.  eBay calls it's sellers, particularly their power sellers to advise them of changes or promotions.  They do not ask you for any personal information or passwords.

FRAUD ALERT! BEWARE! This is a FICTITIOUS telephone number used for supposed eBay marketing calls which DO NOT originate from eBay! The voicemail left on my cell phone went like this:"Hi, my name is ... and I'm calling in reference to [your eBay User id here]. I just wanted to let you know that eBay is making changes to it's trading assistant program. You must create new profile by February 11, 2008 in order to remain in the directory. Please go to: ebaytradingassistant.com. Thank you for using eBay."All legitimate eBay web pages will have ebay.com/ in the web address. The address provided above does not originate from eBay. If you do a simple Google search for "eBay trading assistant", this URL does not appear as one of the top sites! You can also double check by logging into your eBay account, searching for "trading assistant" and making a note of the URL from there.

Tried to call back and got a very general message giving business hours of 8-5 (very strange since it's after business hours). Just got off the phone with a Blue Shield representative (at the number on my insurance card). She told me the company DOES contract with Alere. Blue Shield offers at no additional charge (that's a shocker!) some personalized care/treatment/information for clients with chronic or long-term conditions. This James Barnett fellow does not have access to Blue Shield's data base, which is why he asks questions about things you would think he could see on his computer. So she said that the call was not a scam after all.

They said no, that's ok, they would call again. So, I am guessing it was a scam. However, I did just get real mail from Blue Shield talking about enrolling in their diabetes program and I called Blue Shield and its legit. So who knows...very suspicious that they wouldn't give me their number though!

I just received a voicemail from the Reno number (775) 829-8885 that addressed me by name, allegedly from someone "calling from Great West Healthcare, now a part of Cigna."  In a credulous tone of voice, she said that she "would like to review a no-cost program with you that is being offered as part of your healthcare plan.  Great-West encourages your enrollment in this program because it has been so helpful to many members."  She asked me to call 1-888-287-7204 option 6 to discuss the program with me.Neither the 775 nor the 888 number resolves to Great-West or Cigna, and while I recognize that companies sometimes outsource call center activities, I err on the side of caution because there are so many scams out there and I really have no easy way of validating the legitimacy of the caller.  If my insurance company wishes to interest me in offers, they may do so in writing, with contact information that actually matches information I know to be correct.  I don't like to be called anyway, and will not make changes to my insurance over the phone to some cold caller, so even if this is legit, the company is going about it the wrong way.Oh yeah, and in googling the originating phone number, I found the Alere website and this page, which shows that callers have represented themselves as Blue Shield.  Even if this is a legit out-sourced call center, do our insurance companies really want to encourage us to accept offers that are presented in this fashion?  Seems to me that such behavior will get you phished sooner or later for the reason I mentioned above, namely that you can't readily verify the legitimacy of the caller.  I will not call back, and I hope there will be no more calls or I may have to contact my insurance provider at their known number (not the number given in the voicemail) to complain.

his is something all the insurers are doing now, which is getting their insureds with certain diseases into care management programs.  Sounds so good that it's a no-cost program and has all these benefits.  But the real question is why would a for-profit company want to spend additional money to do this.  I fear turning over decision making to an RN who will review what my MD says.  They also will set you up with goals and call and assess whether you're meeting your goals.  What if you can't/don't reach their goals?  They wanted to know in the first part of their phone call if I was seeing a cardiologist, oncologist, etc.  I replied yes.  They asked which one.  I said if you're calling me from the insurance company, surely you have that info.  I mean, they should have all the codes and know the exact diagnosis as well as the treatment.  They cited that HIPAA kept them from having access to that info.  Really?   But they wanted confirmation of birth date.  I'm running away from it.  DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR ADDRESS!  Once we had a diagnosis, we started getting offers from pre-paid funeral and cremation providers.

The letter also contains offers for 24 months of free credit monitoring, identity theft insurance and reimbursement for the costs of a credit report freeze and removal. A toll free phone number is provided for more information as well as links to web sites. One woman’s comments were typical of those voiced by other consumers. “I thought this might be a scam,” she told the BBB. “I was afraid to call the toll free number and give them any information. BNY Mellon Shareowner Services is mailing millions of similar letters across the country. BBBNY Mellon Shareowner Services spokesperson, Kevin Heine, told the BBB, “While there has been no indication that the data on the lost tapes has been misused in any way, we are offering comprehensive fraud protection to all affected individuals as a precaution.” The company has posted more information at www.bnymellon.com/tapequery. “Consumers who called us to check on this mailing were wise,” said BBB president, David Weiss. “While this mailing turned out to be legitimate, the BBB is seeing an increase in attempts to gather private information that can be used as identity theft tools.” There are many ways to reduce your risk of identity theft. I received a letter also and I was suspect because I didn't work for Honda and the expiration date of the offer was the same date I received this letter.  However, that night my local news station aired a story about the stole tapes and it affecting hundreds of South Dakotans.  The next day, I spoke to my work since it was their stock that Mellon handles and they said it was legit.  I was still questioning it cause of Honda wondering if maybe there are also fake letters going out.  I followed a link on the local news station story and found a number to call.  The letter is legit, they apologized for having the wrong employer on there.  I got my activation code and I registered for the free credit monitoring.  Yes, obviously I did need to give my SSN to register for the credit report monitoring however considering the research I did and the route I took to contact them I am confident its not a scam.  I have included the link to the news story as well as a FAQ for mellon (I called the number on the bottom).  You can also just google BNY Mellon and get a number that way.  Hope this helps.  http://keloland.com/NewsDetail6162.cfm?ID=0,73701  http://www.bnymellon.com/tapequery/

I got one of the letters with both JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. and Honda at the top.  It referenced another letter that I supposedly got (but not really) from BNY Mellon Shareowner Services.  Like all the rest of you, my personal info has supposedly been lost, but I have never been an employee of Honda or and ADR stock holder.  The number that was in my letter to call for info was 1-877-278-3461.  This is the number that directs you hit option 1 if you received a letter.  After several tries I got through.  The person I spoke to couldn't tell me why my name was on the list, but after giving her my name and the last 3 digits of my SS#, she gave me the activation code and a number to call Experian to register (1-866-579-4461).  I wasn't able to get through though--I kept getting the message that because of high call volume they couldn't take my call and to try later.  After reading all these other posts though, I think the whole thing is a scam.

We have all had messages from ebay stating not to give information except on the ebay webpage and you know that is legit.

ebay is like any other major company...have you ever heard of outsourcing?

Not true!  I've sold on eBay for 13 years and have been called several times by legitimate eBay employees to see if I was interested in selling tips, etc.  They have also called when they are running a special rate for certain listing features.  They don't call every seller, but they do call, particularly if you are a power seller.

Yes, this is an eBay number. I am a power seller and they call and update you on changes and new information that might be important to your business.

801-545-1800

592 Report Long ago Unknown
This number is Ebay and when you call it it tells you they call to give information to members. There is no further action required if you receive a call from this number. For example they may call to give suggestions to their "Top Rated Sellers". I usually hang up on them even though I am such a seller.

That is patently untrue.  As an eBay seller, I get regular calls from eBay regarding policy changes and maximizing my sales.  eBay DOES call you when there isn't a problem.  But they need to show up on the caller ID as eBay, in my opinion.

Why would they call you to say a fraud case had been resolved instead of just sending you an email????  And it is possible that if your computer was violated in some way, someone might know about your fraud case.  But, if it really is resolved, why call, unless to gain your trust for the future. And, to the others who like these calls, why would eBay want to become a telemarketer like so many annoyance calls.  Do they think people like being called???I got one call a few days ago and no message left.

801-545-1800

Do you cower in fear when the phone rings and you dont know the number? (its actually ebay people. for REAL) but heres an Idea folks, when you get a phone call, answer it, if you dont like what you hear, hang up. That simple. If you NEVER want to hear from them again, tell them to remove you from your list, and if they dont you will report them to that national call center thing. (My bad for not knowing what its called, nor having the patience to look it up after reading so many useless comments) But I think most of you know what i am talking about,. No offense of course......

gaboy replies to KreationsByKat8 Feb 2012Ebay knows there' s lots of scams out there wright? why the not communicating this trough emails  like when let you know is time to pay your fees?-------...because everyone knows there are so many fewer email scams than phone scams, right?Do people even think before they post?-eBay calls their members, mostly sellers, and especially PowerSellers (like me).-if you are not getting calls, and are a PowerSeller, chances are you opted out (like, the first time they called you and you said "don't call me again" because you were paranoid that it was not really eBay)-this is the number that they have been calling from for several years-how would they know your eBay ID, name, AND phone number to call you and identify you by name and eBay ID?-i don't have to "prove" anything, when the burden of proof required is not that this is legitimate, but that it is not.  In other words, all you paranoid people should call the number back, or contact eBay (whereupon you will be given a PIN number and phone number to contact eBay with - it isn't public without a request so that it will not be constantly phished - a protection for YOU, so you don't get scammed).
