Lesley-Ann Thompson’s cell phone buzzed the other week with a text message telling her she had won a $1,000 gift card from Best Buy.“It said my entry had won, and I knew I hadn’t entered anything,” said Thompson, who was sharing late-morning conversation with a friend at Alon’s Bakery and Market in Dunwoody.Best Buy had nothing to do with the text message, the contest or the alleged gift card. The whole thing was a fraud, as confirmed by Thompson’s fiance. He searched online and discovered a list of responses from people that said they had received a similar message on their mobile phones.“It didn’t surprise me, actually,” Thompson said. But some consumers may be lured in by what seems like free money. They open an attached link or call the number included in the message. After following a few prompts, someone has their financial or personal information as well as the ability to steal money from them.As more people buy Smartphones, the opportunity for scams becomes more attractive. Mobile phone consumers received 1.5 billion text spam messages in 2008, for example. In 2011, that figure shot up to 4.5 billion text spam messages, according to Ferris Research, a market research firm that tracks mobile spam. While striking, those numbers are significantly less than one percent of all text messages that go out, said Lance Skelly, spokesman for Atlanta-based AT&T Mobility, the nation’s No. 2 wireless carrier.Text spamming is illegal, but that’s not stopping spammers, who typically start by sending out tens of thousands of messages at once. Most use a computer to generate millions of mobile phone number combinations, hoping even a fraction of those numbers are working and that someone will respond.Skelly at AT&T Mobility warned of recent scams such as one that emerged after Hurricane Isaac. Customers reported receiving text spam messages saying they had qualified for public assistance to recover from storm damage.“Most people would probably figure out it’s not a legitimate website,” he said. “Sometimes these messages prey on people who are having a hard time and who are in a real need.”Mobile phone companies are trying to fight back with a combination of internal security measures and by asking customers to aggressively report spam messages to their wireless carrier.Security company Cloudmark created a spam messaging reporting service that nation’s major wireless carriers agreed earlier this year to start using. Now, customers of AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, Sprint and others can forward their text spam message to 7726. The mobile phone carrier will ask customers for the phone number that’s linked to the spam message so they and Cloudmark can start investigating.“Whenever [a spam message] comes to you, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t say anything to anybody,” said Jeff Blyskal, a senior editor at Consumer Reports magazine. Two federal laws ban text spam in most instances. A few cases have made it to the courts. Last year the Federal Trade Commission settled a case against an alleged spammer accused of sending unsolicited commercial messages pitching mortgage modification services to consumers. The man also was accused of misrepresenting that he was affiliated with a government agency.Christine Todaro, an attorney with the FTC, said customer complaints were “pivotal” in prosecuting the case. The man was banned from sending future text messages as part of the settlement reached. Not every text message from a retailer, mobile phone company or service provider is spam. But companies are prohibited by federal law from sending out messages unless a customer gives an “OK,” which is usually by signing up online or in a store.“If something doesn’t look right, look into it,” said Kate Jay, an Atlanta-area spokeswoman for Verizon Wireless. If a message instructs you to type “STOP,” saying you won’t get any more texts, the opposite is true. Sending “STOP” only confirms that the mobile phone number is a working one. At the very least, ignore the text spam message, though experts point out that doesn’t help track down the source.Customers who are attached to their Smartphones, frequently making sure they haven’t missed a text message, phone call or email, become a captive audience for spammers. If a consumer gets a text message purporting to be from a store they frequent or from their bank, they are more likely to think the message is a valid one. This means the chances of that person responding to the spam message have gone up significantly.“That’s the common misperception: people think that this is targeted to them personally. That someone has their number, and that it’s really meant for them,” said Mary Landesman, senior security researcher at Cloudmark, a San Fransisco-based firm that provides messaging security for major wireless carriers.Going to the website to redeem that too good to be true offer or calling the number listed in the text spam message to what you think is your bank may seem innocent enough. But then customers are asked to give their account login and password. Or, they could be asked to hand over credit card information, the card’s security code and their social security number.“And so now you’re giving some stranger your username and password to your bank information, and then they can log in and do whatever they want,” said Blyskal at Consumer Reports. In cases where customers willingly give up their credit card and other personal and financial information, those numbers end up being sold to other cybercriminals. For customers who have limited data plans or who are charged per text message, receiving several text spam messages a month can be costly. Spam messages that include audio, videos or photos can cost even more for customers who don’t have data plans.[Text spam] is illegal for a reason, it costs people money,” Skelly at AT&T Mobility said.http://www.ajc.com/news/business/text-spam-messages-on-the-rise/nSW3C/

I continue to receive calls from this number and have advised them not to call.  It is a philppine individual who continues to call.  I registered on the do not call list and the Federal Communications Commission needs to look into these calls which are not only annoying but constant harassment.  It appears the do not call list is not working and needs to be investigated to reveal its worth.

I believe this is Esta Sol travel scam again. They have been hounding me for 3 years now about 4 times a week and never leave a message. Here are some other numbers that they used to call from: 402-982-XXXX, 406-852-XXXX, a 202 area code (Wash DC), and of course 701-217-1512. They will not remove you from their list no matter how many times you ask them. Irritating pests.

Looks like this might be Esta Sol again. Some ridiculous travel package nonsense that I have repeatedly said "not interested". They won't take no for an answer and they won't stop calling. They just change their phone number and harass you for another year. This has to be the 400th time they have called. Ugh!

The national pandemic of telephone terrorism perpetrated by desperate criminal collection agencies is because they are trying to terrorize people who are naive enough to answer and submit to unsolicited telephone calls or written "collection" letters that have no legitimate legal debt associated with them or any of the companies, universities, or whomever else they claim to represent. Because most "little guys" were bankrupted by the criminal Wall St/Congress/Big Oil/Big Bankers/Big Business/Military/Robber Barons, so the desperate collection agencies are attempting to collect unpaid debts from innocent people by terrorizing them into submission.Word of advice. NEVER answer any calls you don't recognize or are not expecting. Use selective call rejection service if available, or switch to an Internet-based telephone service which provides comprehensive call rejection options. If rogue calls become chronic, turn off all the ringers on all of your phones except one, and set its volume to the minimum setting. If you don't answer the call and the caller is legitimate, they will usually leave a voicemail after the first or second try. Rogue callers never leave voicemail messages because that could be used as evidence against them if it came to a lawsuit. If you receive a rogue letter in the mail warning you of some "collection" action against you, if you don't actually owe it, reply with a short letter stating that you don't owe it. Or if you do owe all or part of it, reply with something like "You claim I owe you a debt. Under §809 FDCPA, I request validation of this debt."Only give them your name as THEY have written it to you (e.g. “John Doe” not “Jonathon Q. Doe” or however you normally sign your own name), address, and the account number they report. But if you do not owe the debt (zombie debt, aged debt, mistaken or stolen identity, forgery, etc.) state that you have never done any business with them or with the (alleged) original creditor of any kind and you expect the collection agency to close the matter, stop harassing you and take any bad credit marks they've caused off of your credit rating, and furthermore, that any further contact from them must be in writing on their official business correspondence letterhead. Send your letter to them a.s.a.p., always within thirty days, first class certified mail return receipt requested. If they refuse it and you get the letter back unopened, leave it unopened and save it in your files as evidence against them should they pursue legal action against you. If they did receive it and continue to pursue action against you, let them. The judge will throw it out of court. If the rogue collection agency sells your account to another rogue collection agency just tell them the claim has been proven invalid and offer to send them a copy of your letter to the previous rogue collection agency. Warn all your friends about this rash of desperate collection agency terrorism, and how to combat it. Knowledge is power. The more you learn how to combat rogue collection agencies, back-taxes scammers, phishing scammers, and other flimflammers, the more you will learn how easy it is to do.Above all, keep a record of everything, of every rogue call w/ caller ID information displayed including time and day of each call. Maintain a complete file on any snail-mailed intimidation from rogue collection agencies, including copies of all correspondences and postal receipts. Reporting rogue calls on sites like800notes.com, whocallsme.com, phoneowner.info is a great idea too, because many people find these sites by googling for the rogue number(s) after receiving calls from them.--Start Here:http://www.google.com/search?num=50&q=%C2%A7809+FDCPAhttp://www.google.com/search?num=50&q=zombie-debthttp://www.google.com/search?num=50&q=slander-of-credithttp://www.google.com/search?num=50&q=limited-liability-company+collection-agencyhttp://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs27-debtcoll.htmhttp://www.ehow.com/way_5849463_do-up-certified-dispute-letter.htmlhttp://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-Defeat-a-Collection-Agencyhttp://hubpages.com/hub/Battling-Consumer-Debt-Collectors-Part-2-I-Do-Not-Owe-This-Debthttp://hubpages.com/hub/Sample-letters-for-disputes-to-creditors--collectors-and-credit-bureaushttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FDCPAhttp://www.fair-debt-collection.com/Disputing ... ute-letter.html (most say the above sample letter is too long and should be much shorter)http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/statue-limitations.htmlCredit Report:https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jspUSPS:http://www.usps.com/send/waystosendmail/extra ... mailservice.htmhttp://www.usps.com/send/waystosendmail/extra ... eiptservice.htmOther links:http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/personal/02/29 ... tors/index.htmlhttp://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-Defeat-a-Collection-Agencyhttp://clarkhoward.com/shownotes/category/12/103/358/http://clarkhoward.com/topics/drop_dead_letter.html--Information for filing complaints against rogue telephone calls, telephone harassment, false "bill collector" harassment, etc.,in the United States and Canada:UNITED STATESUS National Do Not Call Registry, file complaint: https://www.donotcall.gov/complaint/complaintcheck.aspxFederal Trade Commissionhttp://www.ftc.gov 1-877-382-4357File complaint online: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.govhttps://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=enthat is at www.ftc.govFederal Communications CommissionTelephone toll free:  1-888-225-5322http://www.fcc.gov/contacts.htmlFile complaint online: http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumers.htmlhttp://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htmFCC Abandoned Calls Complaint form:http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/1088D-R.pdfemail:  fccinfo@fcc.govBetter Business Bureau, Check out a Business, find owner, contact info; file a Complaint:http://www.bbb.org/us/INTERNET CRIME:File report for Internet Crime at:Internet Crime Complaint Centrehttp://www.ic3.gov/default.aspxCANADARCMP Phone bustersTelephone toll free: 1-888-495-8501Mon-Fri 8:30-5:20 pm (Eastern Time)E-mail: info@phonebusters.comRCMP Website is at: http://www.phonebusters.com  File complaint online:  https://www.recol.ca/intro.aspx?lang=en(Register with a password and then can continually file complaints)Canada National Do Not Call Registry:Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC)Telephone toll free to File A Complaint: 1-866-580-3625(to withdraw a complaint is 877-249-2782)CRTC online complaints form: https://www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/pfplin-fccoin-engthat is at  www.crtc.gc.caBetter Business Bureau, Check out a Business, find owner, contact info; file a Complaint:http://www.bbb.org/canada/

I called the number back and spoke to the operator.  This is an independent company calling on behalf of their clients to deliver promotional offers. When I asked who their clients were, she rattled off a few, stating Wells Fargo, GMAC, and Macys to name a few.  She never did divulge what the company she works for is, and I find it curious it isn't mentioned on the phone menu. FYI.  When asked to press 1 to remove a number, you need to be cautious.  Some of these scams will then validate your number when you do, and use your number to make long distance calls.

The phone number 909-436-2867 has called me several times.  They said it was for a loan that I had back in Dec 2009.  I did not do a payday loan in Dec of 2009 and I asked for documentation to be sent to me regarding this matter and they said they did not have to provide it.  They even quoted my social security number (Which they had wrong) and my banking information, address and all other sensitive information.  I know that in order to have a debt reconcilled they have to provide legal documentation and file it through the courts and you recieve court papers. This is a scam and an invasion of privacy.  I did contact my local police, the FBI and the secret service.  They sound convincing but if you can't remember the debt and they can't provide information to you regarding this matter than it is not legit.Do not fall for thier scams and also thier english is very broken and unappropriate.

Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-888-771-9249   Scammer posting here as GARY and GARRY JONES http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-866-860-4509   Scammer posting here as Mike Hendersonhttp://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-212-500-0839   Scammer posting here as Ricky http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-201-244-7722   Scammer posting as Carole, David Brown and Amandahttp://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-626-200-4646   Scammer false postings at this new number as silshan kanniue and Tina – preparing a new number to use.http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-424-354-4270   Scammer false postings as Rosehttp://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-888-785-4479   Scammer posting as Robert http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-909-327-4870   Scammer false postings as Marry http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-646-274-1143   Scammer false postings as Karen Miller, Chichi and Tom Little http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-561-300-8018   Scammer false postings as Marco Polo (real original)http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-877-226-7488   Scammer false postings as SAM, David Shttp://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-888-706-7463   Scammer false postings as George http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-209-349-7382   Scammer false postings as Towanda Robinson, Shannon Walsh, Jack Dawson and Cynthia http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-760-514-0132   scammer false postings as Suzy01, Johanna Hall, Cindie McMellon, Michael Dublin, Mark Williams, Carol and Rio   (800notes removed some of the scammers posts because the all came from the SAME IP ADDRESS) http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-209-797-2212   scammer false posting as Jaison Connar http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-707-401-4056   Scammer false posting as John Carner, KSR http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-650-241-4604   Scammer false postings as jhon and Kevin http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-708-401-0535   Scammer false posting here as JHON http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-518-212-0219  Scammer false posting as Prince Christian, Arpithttp://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-718-705-8669  Scammer false postings as Alicia http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-707-633-2789  Scammer false postings as Rojer, Minni, Rhone, Smith, Lisa Jack, Julie, Sean, and Carol. – preparing a new number to use to steal moneyhttp://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-205-294-6271  Scammer false posting as Thomas JhonsonScam alert: Bogus debt collectorsBy Leslie McFadden • Bankrate.comMonday, Aug. 3Posted 2 p.m.Bankrate reporter Leslie McFadden contributed this entry. This scam isn't technically about credit cards, but it is scary enough to post a warning. The Better Business Bureau issued an alert today saying consumers across the country are getting phone calls from bogus debt collectors claiming default on a payday loan. Of course, the consumer needs to pay a large fee to avoid arrest -- as much as $1,000.The caller poses as a lawyer, and may threaten extradition to face trial if the consumer doesn't pay up immediately. What makes these calls alarming -- and perhaps convincing -- is that the perpetrators reference the consumer's personal information, such as the person's Social Security number, driver's license number, previous bank account numbers, home address -- even personal references."The amount of information they have is really troubling," says BBB spokeswoman Alison Southwick. She adds that the amount of data points to a possible security breach.Spread the word to your friends and family: Don't give out personal or financial information to an unknown caller. Scammers can spoof Caller ID to display different numbers, so trust your instincts over technology. The BBB offers these tips:•    Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation which substantiates the debt. •    Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the phone until you have confirmed the legitimacy of the call. •    File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission online if the caller is abusive, uses threats or otherwise violates federal telemarketing laws or the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. •    File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau online if you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you.

Well, my mom called me back. My dad is at Via Christi St. Joseph, and he's doing okay. The phone number is from the phones in the waiting rooms at St. Jo. These are only outgoing, so you cannot reach someone by calling the number back.

I had that problem on 9-22-08 as well. I've had to stay a few nights in both Via Christi hospitals in Wichita, and they tend to have multiple extensions to all the regular phone numbers there. I don't know what this number is for, or why it shows up. Their main number is listed as 316-685-1111. My father was going back to the doctor because of complications from a colonoscopy. He may have been taken there for additional tests, since it's the one most commonly used by the doctors we've gone to in the area.
