Guy with accent called, could barely speak English. I said 'hello' and this guy went into his diatribe about my Microsofl computer being messed up, wouldn't stop talking. Told him to "shut up, stop talking" and that I didn't have a Microsoft computer. No answer at the other end, hung up. Scammers seeing as probably 80 of households are using Microsoft............
Report by Robert Long ago Unknown
Put a trace on the call with *57 and maybe they can find out who this is and shut them down.
Report by Dee Long ago Unknown
Guy with heavy Indian accent and lots of background noise calls telling me he's with 'Windows' and my computer is at risk of getting an 'infection'.  He told me that antivirus programs don't scan for 'infections' and I needed to follow his directions to fix my problem.  I then told him I have a Mac, and he said they were at risk too and he could help me.  I finally told him I didn't need his services and hung up.  He called back a couple minutes later - from a number in the 917 area code -  to argue with me about it!  Obnoxious!
Report by Dave Brandt Long ago Unknown
This one may be spammers calling from separate residences. He said he was in New York but the area code doesn't check out! A foreign sounding male said he was calling from "Computer Maintenance department" from "Windows". No company, just "'Windows"! Reported that my computer is infected and is sending confidential info to whatever. After awhile he asked what kind of computer I had. I said "Mac". He paused for a moment and then said thank you and hung up!! Talk about a low life!
Report by Robert Long ago Unknown
The "DO NOT CALL LIST" is a bogus joke, obviously. I get this call and others from people trying to sell me something or get me to give money all the time. I did a *57 trace on this call but I don't know what good it will do.
Report by Linda Long ago Unknown
This guy just called me also, something about my computer, told him I didn't have one and hung up.  I have my number on the do not call list.  There should be something that can be done about this.

Same caller from Washington, no message, early in the morning, has woken me up 2 x.

This number has been calling my home days and night, waking us up.  Few time when I catched the call no one was on the other side.Today I got someone to talk to me, a young man with Indian Accent stating he was calling from UK; he was unable to answer the simple question: "Who are you working for?" ... This is suspicious.  He transfered me to a said supervisor who remained unable to answer the same question.  They end up hanging up on me!!!Next time, I won't bother to answer.

I received call from this source 206-397-1127 as confirmed by the telephone feature *69.  I went ahead with a *57 tracing also because this is the second anonymous call to my otherwise private number.  Additionally, I paid a new service provider, Instant Checkmate to look up this number as well as the previous.  Interesting that Instant Checkmate gives an initial verification that the name of the person using the landline number is available; yet, when accessing the server through a subscription (the 5-day trial for 99 cents), the private information is not availalbe.  USSearch.com also yields no data and eventually stalls out with an error message.  I suggest people start using the *57 to help these scamsters to get put in a cage.

THIS IS A SCAM. Read about the your-PC-is-infected-corrupted scam here http://news.softpedia.com/news/Cold-Call-Tech ... on-150170.shtml They lie about your PC sending out malware, error messages, etc., and say your PC is about to crash to frighten you into giving them remote control of your PC to fix the nonexistent problem (don't let them!). If they ask you to open the systems tab in eventvwr.msc to see all the errors, these harmless errors are *normal* for any Windows PC (mine has several and it runs just fine). Don't let them take control of your PC because they can download *real* malware, possibly a malware suite, that can spam, steal bank logins and personal info, etc. If they've remoted into your PC, the safest fix is to re-format your drive and re-install your OS assuming you have clean backups of your data. You can try scanning with various antivirus software but scanning may not find all the malware. If you don't know how, get help from friends or pay a local shop to do it. THIS IS A SCAM.

Some guy called my Sister today from this number saying something about her computer sending malicious messages to him. He tried to get her to give him access to her computer. Luckily she was smart enough to hangup on him. Interesting thsat it's a Seattle number. I believe he told her he was from Illinois When I dialed the number back I got a voice message saying if I do not want to get calls "with special offers" from them and want to be added to the "do not call list" to press 1. My best guess.: Scammer.

Its almost midnight, and I just received a call on my cell phone from this number. Almost makes me glad I'm somewhat nocturnal, and wasn't woken up by an unknown number I will never answer.

800-225-5288

18 Report Long ago Unknown
This number has been calling my cell phone almost every day for the past week, usually at 9 am. I answered the first time, there was no response.

800-225-5288

Same here -- has called daily for the last several days, once or twice a day, and when the machine picks up (I never answer 800 calls), no message.  If someone doesn't leave a message, it's not serious enough for me to pay attention to the call, you know?

800-225-5288

18 Report Long ago Unknown
Calls about six times a day and hangs up when the machine picks up. I think this might be ATT from googling the number. If you are going to call leave a message or stop calling!

Received a phone call from (800) 225-5288.  I didn't answer.  They didi't leave a message.  I called the number back and it was AT&T talking about collect calls, etc.  Scam?  Or someone actually calling me collect?  Mmmmmmm.

800-225-5288

Also, an operator can be brought on the line if needed. Listen carefully to the automated message. The call is not accepted/charged until you say the words "Accept".

800-225-5288

18 Report Long ago Unknown
This is AT&T's 1-800 Number. If this pops up on your caller ID, someone is trying to call you collect. It could be someone you know or not. Be cautious, and be sure to listen carefully when the caller's name is mentioned before accepting!

800-225-5288

I received a call from 1-800-225-5288.  My caller-ID listed it as "Toll Free Call," so I didn't answer.  I then got a voice mail saying it was AT&T calling about a recent call I had made to AT&T.  Since my customer service rep was very capable and helpful, I will take the call the next time. That number stands for 1-800-CALL ATT.

Same junk! I rec'd a couple of calls from 800-225-5288. A person with Middle Eastern accent identifies herself as being from AT&T, but "not a sales call". She asks me to confirm my name, once I do, she hangs up. Is AT&T frontloading these calls so we request more services??? I already subscribe to their Anonymous Caller ID svc which is supposed to route these calls to a recording. Yet, they also offer "Privacy Manager" which does a similiar function for more $$$$. I emailed cust svc to see why the svc included with my acct, which I am paying for is not working. I also inquired about so many 800 numbers getting through. I have been on No Call Registry forever. Even rec'g a spam call on my AT&T GoPhone from some preacher over and over agin quoting scripture! We'll see what they have to say.

Received a call from 1-800-225-5288 person said he was calling about my DSL and said he needed to clean my computer of viruses.Informed me that it would take 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I told him I didn't have time and he said he would call back Mon or Tues.I called a DSL rep and they put their supervisor on the phone and they told me it was a scam call to just disregard it.The same person called back from 1-800-225-5288 three times on Sat. I spoke with him the last time and lied to him telling him that my DSL was working just fine but I needed his name and a phone number I could reach him at, he said his name was Jim and I could call 1-888-321-2371.I called Customer service Monday morning and they also told me that it was a scam, I turned around and called them again and this time was told that the phone number was affiliated with AT&T and was one of their old numbers.I called DSL Wednesday and they verified that one of their Representatives had called me four times on Saturday but denied that it was generated from 1-800-225-5288, however that is the phone number that showed up on my caller ID.This is a scam and it is one that AT&T is aware that they are responsible for.I have called the annoyance phone line and they said there was nothing they could do about it, they refused to try and trace the call.I think AT&T is the ones that is generating these calls, as soon as I can find a way to get another phone service that is in no way affiliated with AT&T I will join the other 40,000 people in my County and leave them to scam those that haven't left them yet.

Called to ask me how my service was.  What was weird was I was just having some issues with my connectivity at the time.  Maybe they detected it, regardless just told me to contact a technician when the issues was happening.  It happens every 30 minutes I said.  Then the guy tells me to call the technician number when its happening.  I guess its cheaper to have somebody who doesn't know things about connectivity to call and ask about it rather than somebody who could actually help you on the spot.  By the way it was almost 8 on a Friday when they called me.

I received a telephone call to my residential phone on December 2, 2008 that Star-69 reported as (800) 225-5288. The number stands for "CALL ATT," an automated service apparently used to initiate foreign and operator assisted calls. Still curious, I navigated through the menu hoping to speak to a customer service representative. At some point, the automated voice asked me to confirm my telephone number which it identified as (518) 956-0000, incredibly not the actual number from which I was calling. Subsequently, the AT&T rep could not explain why I got a phone call from "CALL ATT" or why their computers would misidentify an incoming call from my phone on a line serviced and listed by AT&T. Furthermore, AT&T did not have information for (518) 956-0000. Nevertheless, a brief Internet search suggests this is supposedly a cell phone with an Albany, NY area code, however, it answers with a fax tone. I remain mystified. An earlier post to this site referenced OPTICOM, a company that is reputed to charge much higher rates than AT&T for similar connections. It is my understanding that Opticom's number was (800) 255-5288, so suspiciously close to "CALL ATT" as to catch the unwary who might dial in error. When firmly pressed for identification, operators at 255-5288 now report it as listed to NCIC, Network Communications International Corporation. I would not be surprised if NCIC might have an equally dubious rate structure.

Received two calls on my cell. Did not answer. Looked up the # and it said "Opticom". Reported to be a "rip off" company that uses schools, hospitals, prisons, etc. to charge very very very high rates.

I have a car on gumtree and car sales. yesterday was a text from a peter tayolor (using a different number). I stupidly emailed and got a blurb about father in malaysia , will pay more for car etc etc etc.. and wanting pay pal details.. sounded a bit fishy to me so I started surfing and found this. Today I have text from the number you guys listed but is saying its a Jodie Andrews... same deal as everyone else. Spoke to a friend as I dont paypal stuff very ofter and thought it was really safe and I couldnt work out the angle. Apparently what has been happening is that when you do give paypal details.. you then receive a false paypal email to say money has been transferred and then they request you pay to western union the shipping fee.  Or some just straight out further into the emails ask you to transfer the extra money paid to western union for shipping fee. Just a new twist on an old scam, however I feel much better knowing that paypal is safe... and of course the answer is to make sure money is in your bank account and not paypal first. However I do wonder how many people they do get. They must be sucking people in for alll the texts they send out or it wouldnt be worth it. Arsewipes!

They called yesterday based on an ad that only ran for a total of two days on Craigslist and then was pulled.  All I said on the ad was that I was selling some guitars at my garage sale. They caught me while I was napping and I gave them my address to send me a 'flyer' describing their guitar buying program.  After I was no longer groggy I started to get paranoid that maybe somebody was trying to case a good place to burglarize and managed to scam me out of my address.I'm actually relieved to find out that they are a scam, but not the kind I originally feared.  What surprises me about this is that I ran the ad for less than 24 hours and then cancelled it yet two days later they called.  They must have some sort of bot or something that trolls & captures Craigslist ads with the word guitar in it and a phone number.I pity the person that needs cash so bad that they send them their guitar.  I would donate my unneeded guitars to a neighborhood kid before I would send them in to these schlocks.

I mean what do they want you to do. Send them the guitar first and then hope you get paid?? Is anyone really that dumb.i used to leave my email available for people to email me with any questions on items I would try to sell on craigslist and got several scams that way too so I stopped leaving my email availible. They have called only once so far and if they persist I will call my phone company and have it blocked. I posted an ad for a guitar on craigslist as well. They responded with an email that contained a link to their website. The page on their site was a "FORM" with which I (and you) willingly entered my phone number. If you willingly type your phone number on a website that is not a scam. Plus,, if you post anything on Craigslist, 99% of the time you give the responder your number so that you can coordinate some viewing of the item you are posting. The fact they may be returning the call is just because they are not talking to the poster of the ad!

250-412-6166 based in Victoria, British Columbia through Allstream (their phone company). Of course this freak's name is unlisted, but on the automated call the woman had a distinct Canadian accent, that she was trying to cover up. Her name was "Susie" and wanted to talk to me about my home mortgage. And the housing market is bad. I don't think that would concern Canadians, as they are not in the U.S. Do Not Call registry doesn't investigate unless they get enough complaints to consider it an attempt at fraud or ID theft. That's usually related to other more serious crimes.
