These people are so pathetic, and lazy. Who gave them the right to call and interrupt my day? Also, they had the nerve to talk about criminal background, when they are the ones who are doing criminal activities, what thieves they are. Do not let these people fool you, and do not give them any information when it comes to your financial history, because they only want it to steal your money. I do not think the government would hire anyone with such a thick accent that is hard for anyone to understand. When I ask this pathetic loser to send me information to my e-mail, he refused and said he told me everything I needed to know. He said this is the United States Federal Grant Department, and I have been selected for $7,000. To continue, he gave me this money confirmation pin:UA321, and a code:202-657-6082, and he said first to ask for Jennifer when I call, or Christina Scott (Oh please, as if the government would allow some unprofessional punk to call people and give them grant as if they are calling one of their friends)! These frauds are so retarded in their minds, I ask him to give me the money in check, and he refused, he said cash and I agree (the government would not give anyone 7,000 USA in cash, and would not call you, but rather send it in a letter notifying you). However, why would I be selected, and I did not even compete to win money (as if people are that generous to just give some random person money). The number that he called me on was: 666-008-6253. Make sure that you do not give them your social security number! These people are nothing but the devil, they are serpent in the grass ready to scam, and trick your mind, and wallet. The next time some weird, psycho, trickster, thief, sicko, and sick in the head try to play any of their little dirty game they had plan to use on people, I will give them a piece of my outspoken mind; and they are not going to like it, and I could care less (that is way I need God to help me detect crazy unintelligent people, who only come to deceive the minds of the youngster, and older people. Now that I have given you this helpful information, use them to detect people like these, and defend yourself from the evildoers. By: I do not tolerate filth!

Got the same call today, heavy accent, lot of noise in the background. Let me ask some questions: Did u recently apply for a grant? The lady said "direct deposit" or "cash". Never give yur bank info out!!! So i said "check" & she kinda giggled and said no, direct deposit or cash. Do u really think the gov. would send $7000 in CASH?? Did a lil research, the number was 585 area code, thats in central NY. Then gave a number to call w/ a 202 area code, which is in DC. So far so good right...BUT that number is listed as a suspicios number. eerrr... My caller had a heavy indian accent, and reading the other posts so did their caller. Does the treasury department have alot of indian grant reps?? Does the US government outsource it's phone service? WTF?? Well i asked the lady if she could tell me what street the white house was on & she couldn't...but then again there are americans that don't know that answer. So i'll keep calling...(just in case..lol) i'll keep getting the busy signal...eventally they'll call back, and when they do, i'll have more questions. I'll keep u posted
Report by amric33 Long ago Unknown
The same happened to me so i had my fiance call and say he was a police officer to see what they would say she got scared and became speechless and hung up. I then called back and told her if she used my information she would get caught because my nearest social security office and bank were notified that someone had my identity. it worked for me so i guess if no body else helps us people that are getting scammed then we have to clever and find away to help ourselves.

This "unknown number" called my cell phone and they already knew my name and address and asked how old I was and said that since certain people don't have a criminal record and do well with their taxes, they are allowed a $7,000 grant that they don't have to pay back. She had a really thick accent and I could barely understand her and there were a lot of voices in the background. She asked me how I would like to recieve my money, cash or through a bank account. Then she told me to call 202-657-6082 and give a "confirmation number" to her manager and to keep calling because there were also a lot of other people calling to get their grant money. I called just to see if anything happened and all it was was a busy signal. I'm never answering my phone again >.<

Just got a call with a bad connection from a guy with a heavy Indian accent.  He said I was getting a free grant of $7000 that I didn't have to pay back. I could bearly understand what he was saying, but I wasn't giving him my bank info.  I asked where he was calling from and he said, "Washington, DC."  He gave me a Grant ID # and phone # to call 202-657-6082.   I researched the number online while talking with him a saw the posts. Then before I could hang up "call waiting" beeped; I switched over.  Another Indie rep responded with  $7K gov grant spiel.

THIS IS A SCAM. This is a version of the advance-fee-for-something scam where something is a grant, loan, scammed-money refund, lottery winnings, interest rate reduction, tax reduction, gift card, refund, doggie, cruise, vacation, free gas, etc., and the advance-fee is for tax, shipping, registration, insurance, secure handling, processing, etc. They may send you a fake check, may want your credit/debit card or bank account number, or tell you to wire cash via Western Union, Moneygram, etc. They can put recurrent difficult-to-cancel monthly charges or a 1-time charge on your card or bank account, and sell account info to other criminals and you'll have to replace accounts altogether. Wired-cash is irretrievable - once it's picked up at the other end, it's untraceable and gone. If they want you to call them up for instructions, they may tell you not to discuss the wire with Western Union desk clerks but the real reason is WU clerks are familiar with these scams and will warn you not to wire the money. If you give them the WU Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN) for the wire, they can pick up the money from anywhere in the world. Report to US Postal Service Inspectors https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/forms/MailFraudComplaint.aspx , the Federal Communications Commission http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm , the Federal Trade Commission https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ and your state AG, as appropriate.

Calls 2-3x a week.  John Mooreland / Moreland.  A month ago I received a voicemail from a woman and I called back.  She was not in, but the same voice of John answered the phone. I asked what it was about and he said he did not know.  When she called back, she said she was from the Jaycees.  I told her to fax me the info and I will give it to my boss.  Fax was about donating to the Jaycees.  Now John leaves a message for BOTH me and my boss.  This is bordering harassment.  Number is 608-240-1670.

message left a couple of weeks ago by Bob Newhouse; called back then and was told they were fundraising for the Jaycees.  I asked them to remove me and he said he would, but called back several more times over the next two weeks.  A month and a half later they called again and said i should call back John Moreland.  Called them back again (didn't catch that it was the same bunch until they answered) and asked them AGAIN to remove me from their list.  Does anybody know - are these jerks really calling on behalf od the Jaycees or just some telemarketer trying to get a credit card number?  I used to have more repect for the Jaycees...apparently they've begun endorsing crooked, predatory tactics just to get a shot at a couple of bucks.  I will never donate to them again after going through this

I had to think back on this so, I could be wrong but…It's very legal. It's called Virtual DID (direct inward dialing) to a Telephone co's local branch exchange and it's been around for a very long time.  Many companies use it to establish a "local presence” opposed to having an ubiquitous Toll Free number for clients to call even if they don’t have a brick and mortar location in that area.  Now with VOIP in the mainstream, it is just like hosted websites, you pay a small fee and can be set up anywhere.  VOIP Vonage (great alternative to landline) could give you a number anywhere in the country. Say you go to college on east coast and all your friends & fam are on west coast...you get a west coast phone # so everyone can call you w/o long distance charges.  Unfortunately, this also means the sky is the limit because it eradicates the higher cost telcos only providers, little hardware, extremely quick setup, and managed so it and makes it a telemarketer’s playground.

I sent an email to the email address provided  . . . dnc@tmcallerid.comOn their webiste they state "TM Caller ID, LLC can help you manage your outbound caller ID" . . . This to me is fishy . . . are they providing a means to their "clients" to circumvent what the actual caller id is?  If I don't get a reasonable response from TM Caller Id Do Not Call representative, then I will be filing a complaint with the FCC.

Since leaving this note, we continue to get these calls after hours at our business on our voice mail.  Someone did telephone during business hours last week and I pressed "1".  When a real person finally picked up, I was shocked that it was a real person and when I said so, they hung up on me.  It is quite obvious that they will do whatever they need to in order to make their "loans".  But, if you want them to stop harassing you, they aren't interested in having that conversation.

I just had a similar experience. They are calling a business however via computer, there have been several calls this week, but after having started during our company greeting, I kept missing the opportunity to get a person on the line. Finally I did today. I told them the person no longer worked for our company ( hasn't for over 4 years). The person on the other end was extremely rude, and insisted that the ex-employee gave this number. After a few other unpleasant exchanges she hung up on me while I was answering her question. FACT: It is unnecessary to call an individual an infinite amount of times to badger about a debt.FACT: Any entitled creditor has the right to communicate with the debtor about the debt, in writing, but not continuously over the phone just to badger in an attempt to harass, embarrass, or humiliate an individual into submission.FACT: Federal Law requires that any creditor cease telephoning upon request from the individual being called.FACT: There is nothing that cannot be communicated by phone that cannot be communicated by letter.  Not getting the desired response does not entitle a creditor (or assigned collection agency) to repeatedly badger a debtor by telephone.  Clearly, badgering or harassing a debtor with repeated calls demonstrates that the intent is not to communicate (as the debtor already knows about their debt and that the creditor wants their money), but to intimidate or coerce by being a constant nuisance. FACT:  Anybody who works for a collection agency that employs such tactics is SCUM and far worse than someone who cannot pay their bills.  Look at the recent events in the Banking and Finance Industries. They could not pay their debts and got bailed out to the tune of billions of dollars... Yet a person may owe a few hundred for a personal debt and for some reason deserve countless harassing calls from SCUM collectors who are not trying to communicate a debt... just trying to scrape money from Mobster-like LOAN SHARK tactics...

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, enforces the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), which prohibits debt collectors from using abusive, unfair, or deceptive practices to collect from you.Under the FDCPA, a debt collector is someone who regularly collects debts owed to others. This includes collection agencies, lawyers who collect debts on a regular basis, and companies that buy delinquent debts and then try to collect them. Here are some questions and answers about your rights under the Act.What types of debts are covered? The Act covers personal, family, and household debts, including money you owe on a personal credit card account, an auto loan, a medical bill, and your mortgage. The FDCPA doesn’t cover debts you incurred to run a business. Can a debt collector contact me any time or any place? No. A debt collector may not contact you at inconvenient times or places, such as before 8 in the morning or after 9 at night, unless you agree to it. And collectors may not contact you at work if they’re told (orally or in writing) that you’re not allowed to get calls there. How can I stop a debt collector from contacting me?If a collector contacts you about a debt, you may want to talk to them at least once to see if you can resolve the matter – even if you don’t think you owe the debt, can’t repay it immediately, or think that the collector is contacting you by mistake. If you decide after contacting the debt collector that you don’t want the collector to contact you again, tell the collector – in writing – to stop contacting you. Here’s how to do that:Make a copy of your letter. Send the original by certified mail, and pay for a “return receipt” so you’ll be able to document what the collector received. Once the collector receives your letter, they may not contact you again, with two exceptions: a collector can contact you to tell you there will be no further contact or to let you know that they or the creditor intend to take a specific action, like filing a lawsuit. Sending such a letter to a debt collector you owe money to does not get rid of the debt, but it should stop the contact. The creditor or the debt collector still can sue you to collect the debt. Can a debt collector contact anyone else about my debt?If an attorney is representing you about the debt, the debt collector must contact the attorney, rather than you. If you don’t have an attorney, a collector may contact other people – but only to find out your address, your home phone number, and where you work. Collectors usually are prohibited from contacting third parties more than once. Other than to obtain this location information about you, a debt collector generally is not permitted to discuss your debt with anyone other than you, your spouse, or your attorney. What does the debt collector have to tell me about the debt? Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money. Can a debt collector keep contacting me if I don’t think I owe any money? If you send the debt collector a letter stating that you don’t owe any or all of the money, or asking for verification of the debt, that collector must stop contacting you. You have to send that letter within 30 days after you receive the validation notice. But a collector can begin contacting you again if it sends you written verification of the debt, like a copy of a bill for the amount you owe. What practices are off limits for debt collectors?Harassment. Debt collectors may not harass, oppress, or abuse you or any third parties they contact. For example, they may not:     use threats of violence or harm;     publish a list of names of people who refuse to pay their debts (but they can give this information to the credit reporting companies);     use obscene or profane language; or     repeatedly use the phone to annoy someone. False statements. Debt collectors may not lie when they are trying to collect a debt. For example, they may not:     falsely claim that they are attorneys or government representatives;     falsely claim that you have committed a crime;     falsely represent that they operate or work for a credit reporting company;     misrepresent the amount you owe;     indicate that papers they send you are legal forms if they aren’t; or     indicate that papers they send to you aren’t legal forms if they are. Debt collectors also are prohibited from saying that:     you will be arrested if you don’t pay your debt;     they’ll seize, garnish, attach, or sell your property or wages unless they are permitted by law to take the action and intend to do so; or     legal action will be taken against you, if doing so would be illegal or if they don’t intend to take the action. Debt collectors may not:     give false credit information about you to anyone, including a credit reporting company;     send you anything that looks like an official document from a court or government agency if it isn’t; or     use a false company name. Unfair practices. Debt collectors may not engage in unfair practices when they try to collect a debt. For example, they may not:     try to collect any interest, fee, or other charge on top of the amount you owe unless the contract that created your debt – or your state law – allows the charge;     deposit a post-dated check early;     take or threaten to take your property unless it can be done legally; or     contact you by postcard. Can I control which debts my payments apply to? Yes. If a debt collector is trying to collect more than one debt from you, the collector must apply any payment you make to the debt you select. Equally important, a debt collector may not apply a payment to a debt you don’t think you owe.Can a debt collector garnish my bank account or my wages? If you don’t pay a debt, a creditor or its debt collector generally can sue you to collect. If they win, the court will enter a judgment against you. The judgment states the amount of money you owe, and allows the creditor or collector to get a garnishment order against you, directing a third party, like your bank, to turn over funds from your account to pay the debt. Wage garnishment happens when your employer withholds part of your compensation to pay your debts. Your wages usually can be garnished only as the result of a court order. Don’t ignore a lawsuit summons. If you do, you lose the opportunity to fight a wage garnishment. Can federal benefits be garnished? Many federal benefits are exempt from garnishment, including:     Social Security Benefits     Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Benefits     Veterans’ Benefits     Civil Service and Federal Retirement and Disability Benefits     Service Members’ Pay     Military Annuities and Survivors’ Benefits     Student Assistance     Railroad Retirement Benefits     Merchant Seamen Wages     Longshoremen’s and Harbor Workers’ Death and Disability Benefits     Foreign Service Retirement and Disability Benefits     Compensation for Injury, Death, or Detention of Employees of U.S. Contractors Outside the U.S.     Federal Emergency Management Agency Federal Disaster Assistance But federal benefits may be garnished under certain circumstances, including to pay delinquent taxes, alimony, child support, or student loans. Do I have any recourse if I think a debt collector has violated the law? You have the right to sue a collector in a state or federal court within one year from the date the law was violated. If you win, the judge can require the collector to pay you for any damages you can prove you suffered because of the illegal collection practices, like lost wages and medical bills. The judge can require the debt collector to pay you up to $1,000, even if you can’t prove that you suffered actual damages. You also can be reimbursed for your attorney’s fees and court costs. A group of people also may sue a debt collector as part of a class action lawsuit and recover money for damages up to $500,000, or one percent of the collector’s net worth, whichever amount is lower. Even if a debt collector violates the FDCPA in trying to collect a debt, the debt does not go away if you owe it.What should I do if a debt collector sues me?If a debt collector files a lawsuit against you to collect a debt, respond to the lawsuit, either personally or through your lawyer, by the date specified in the court papers to preserve your rights. Where do I report a debt collector for an alleged violation?Report any problems you have with a debt collector to your state Attorney General’s office (www.naag.org) and the Federal Trade Commission (www.ftc.gov). Many states have their own debt collection laws that are different from the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Your Attorney General’s office can help you determine your rights under your state’s law.For More InformationTo learn more about debt collection and other credit-related issues, visit www.ftc.gov/credit and MyMoney.gov, the U.S. government’s portal to financial education. The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop, and avoid them. It is there job to get the person that they are looking for.  What happens if the said deadbeat changes their phone number or has their cell phone taken away, that number is giving to someone else.  Most of the collection agencies are automated now,  it is very unfortunate and rude to be calling a house during dinner time, 7 o'clock in the morning on a Saturday or Sunday, or 11 o'clock at night.  It is not my responsibility to do their job just so they leave me alone.  Nor is it right to give away any personal information, family or not so that they can collect their money.  If they have a problem with a person, let them do the research themselves, if they cannot get the information they need, let them sue the person.  A lot of these banks and debt collection agencies are screwing people with their interest charges and s***, at a time of recession, I think the government should try and help the poor, instead of making it impossible to have your 3 basic needs, let alone money to see a doctor if you are sick, or lose a limb or two.

these guys as with any collection company buy bad debt for fractions of pennies on a dollar.  They are paid on commission so the more they call and search the more money they make.  Understandable right?  However, when they call the wrong person and think you are lying that is where the line is crossed.More so than not they have the right people and they know it, however when they really are calling the wrong people "I am not this person" should be enough.  When you are rude back, that is a sign you indeed are the right person.  When you are very matter of factish and just simply say 'you have the wrong number" and be nice.  Chances are they will bark up another tree.So take those tips as free advise...hahaha

When someone phones your home or cell phone, you are under no obligation to give them any information at all about yourself or other people.  Further more, they are basically on a fishing expedition - calling people with the same or similar name as a person who owes money.  This means a good number of the people they call are not dead beats and should never be called in the first place.  When CPC phones someone and that person advices them not to call any longer, that should be the end of it!  That's the law.  I truly suspect you, ParisMom, work for CPC!  You think the people from CPC want to stop being jerked around?  What about the peopel they are illegally harrassing?  I'm a bit sick of their calls!  I don't owe anyone any money, they have the wrong person! Hi Folks and happy holidays. Here's a bit of information around this topic. 1) Each state has a statute of limitations on when debt is deemed not having to be paid. However, the law does not state that the collector has to stop calling you - they can still try to collect, even though the statute of limitations has passed. IMPORTANT: If you are close to your statute of limitations, DO NOT pay them anything (even if they settle for 2% of the total debt). Also, do not get into any payment agreement with these types of companies. The 2 aforementioned activities WILL re-set the statute of limitations on the debt (as far as your credit report. EXAMPLE: a) You have 2 years left on the statute of limitations. b) You get into an agreement with them (even verbal if they are recording, which they may do if they tell you ahead of time) or you make a small payment toward the debt. Outcome is that reporting on your credit report will re-start from the day of the above.

Listed an item on Craigs List 1/29/13.  Received text from 323-546-9027 (Mark Barrett) 1/30/13.  He offered to pay more if I would hold item longer.  Asked me to take off of Craigs List and consider sold to him.  Which I did.  Had text correspondence for a while, but then it stopped.  He wanted to send check but I made it clear I would not give him item until check cleared HIS bank.  Actually, he had suggested this in his text.  So not sure where this was headed.  Never got far enough to get into anything about sending any money somewhere else.  Anyway, Correspondence stopped.  He won't reply to texts.

Got the same text. Buyer wanted to send a check and additional $ to hold the item. The best thing to do is anytime you think it's a fraud, ask them what city you live in and you will get all kind of crazy responses.

I received the same description of events as listed above... I got a second set of messages today that said that I should receive the payment today and told me to deposit the $ and then send the remainder of the $ via moneygram to a different person and gave me an address.... Ummm, no thank you. Forwarded the information to the fraud department at the bank.
